There seems to be a growing increase in people making accusations with no proof, slandering, backbiting, spreading baseless rumours and other sins, and we seek refuge in Allāh ﷻ from this. These crimes occur only where there is an absence of Taqwā, a lack of Hayā & Ghīrah, and no fear of accountability for one’s speech and actions.

Some of these things occur simply due to disagreements or out of anger, yet how quickly do we fail to realise that a deed done in a moment of anger can lead to a lifetime of regret.
From amongst the worst and most severe of these sins is ❝accusing chaste women❞.
Allāh ﷻ mentions in the 4th Āyah of Sūrah al-Nūr:
وَالَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَاءَ فَاجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَانِينَ جَلْدَةً وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا لَهُمْ شَهَادَةً أَبَدًا وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ
And those who ACCUSE chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with EIGHTY stripes, and REJECT their testimony forever, they indeed are the FASIQŪN (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allāh).
al-Imām Ibn Kathīr رحمه الله mentioned that this is applicable to the man who is accused as well as the woman.
So for anyone who wants to make an accusation towards a Muslim/Muslimah of committing a prohibited sexual act, irrespective of what term they decide to use to do this, and they cannot produce FOUR WITNESSES that can testify to actually seeing this act, then there are THREE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES according to the law of Allāh ﷻ:
1. They should be publicly FLOGGED/LASHED 80 times
2. Their testimony will be REJECTED FOREVER
3. They are declared as FASIQŪN
So before we take such a thing lightly, and utter words without thinking twice, let us realise and understand that a single word we utter is enough to take us to Jahannam, and we ask Allāh ﷻ for protection from this.
It is such a serious matter that the great Mufassir al-Imām al-Qurtubī رحمه الله in his explanation of this verse mentioned TWENTY DIFFERENT MASĀ’IL which are deduced just from this one verse!
(If I get time at a later date I may try to translate this and share it)
If that is not enough to shake our hearts, then know that Allāh ﷻ also mentions again only 20 verses later in the 24th Āyah of Sūrah al-Nūr:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ الْغَافِلَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ لُعِنُوا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
Verily, those who ACCUSE chaste women, who never even think of anything touching their chastity and are good believers, are CURSED in this life and in the Hereafter, and for them will be a great TORMENT.
Once again for those who dare to accuse a Muslimah of committing a prohibited sexual act without proof or evidence, often out of anger, hatred or a personal grudge, then Allāh ﷻ has prepared THREE MORE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES for such an individual:
1. They will be CURSED in this Dunyā
2. They will be CURSED in the Ākhirah
3. They will receive a great TORMENT (in Jahannam)
So for the one who is prepared and ready to face these SIX SEVERE CONSEQUENCES, then let him do as he wishes, but as for the one who fears standing in front of his Lord and he fears the Day of Accountability when all scores shall be settled, then let him hold his tongue and save himself in this Dunyā & Ākhirah.
